Welcome to the start of another wonderful year! The 2016-17 school year promises to be another opportunity to gain success at EES. Elkin Elementary enjoys a tradition of academic success consistently scoring above the state average in state standardized testing. Test scores are important, however here at Elkin Elementary we place in the highest regard the development of the whole child, not just academic successes. Our staff is committed to providing a positive atmosphere that is conducive to learning. We will provide a school climate as secure and orderly as possible, and a safe, clean facility for all children. It is our goal to assure that all the children at Elkin Elementary achieve success. This year our school will work to accomplish skills and manners that are sure to help us reach success. We will be learning from the book, The Essential 55, and it will be the focus of weekly goals such as shaking hands, saying “yes mam, no sir”, picking up after ourselves and much more. We hold high expectations for all students and believe that all children have the ability to learn and be successful. We strive to provide an environment where children can develop to their greatest potential, and feel happy and accepted. Character education, leadership development and civic responsibility are integral parts of our daily routine. With support from parents and the community we cannot fail in preparing our students to become responsible, productive citizens. You are always welcome, and I encourage you to visit, call or email when you have questions or concerns about your child’s learning experience.
As we continue to strive for academic excellence, we are excited to continue our district-wide STEAM/PBL initiative as we journey into the world of becoming a STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics) focused school system through PBL (Project/Problem Based Learning). We believe this will provide the opportunity for our students to become more globally competitive and enhance the skills they need to compete for top universities, community/technical colleges and/or the workforce. The STEAM program provides hands-on classroom experience for students that align with our curriculum. Teachers will integrate a Project Based Learning (PBL) approach that will engage in designing problems. This approach will encourage collaboration, analysis, problem solving, and computational thinking. At Elkin Elementary School, we strive to provide the best possible educational opportunities to each and every student. We make it our personal mission to see all students grow academically and reach their full potential. After all, “We Do No Less Than Our Best!”
Successful schools have parents who are committed to learning and deeply involved with their children’s education. We ask all parents begin this school year by reading the information in this handbook with your children. After the handbook has been read, please sign the forms at the end of the handbook and return them to school with your child by Friday, September 2. Please also get logged on to the Parent Portal if you have not already done so. We also invite you to participate as a volunteer.
