Title I

What is Title I?

Elkin Elementary School is a School-Wide Title I school with 47% receiving free or reduced lunch. One highly qualified and experienced teacher and one assistant serve students in the area of reading using a combination of individual, small group, and whole group instruction.

Teachers utilize data through mClass and DIBELS assessments. Student needs are identified, and instruction is targeted according to specific need. Our schools’ reading enhancement program is called STAR (Steps TAccelerated Reading),  and areas of focus are comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, phonemic awareness and phonics.

Title I provides federal financial assistance to schools with high numbers of economically disadvantaged children to help ensure all children meet achievement standards.  A school must have at least 35% of its students receive free and reduced lunch to qualify.  Elkin Elementary currently has 46% designated.
